Miep Gies, who died on January 11 at the age ofbegins her memoir, "Anne Frank Remembered," by insisting that she was not a hero. Of the eight, only Otto Frank survived the Nazi camps. And of course Anne's diary remains, translated into dozens of languages, offering millions of readers worldwide its brilliant and consciously crafted portrait of that attic, those people, that time, that otherwise unimaginable existence.
Without Miep Gies we would probably never have read Anne Frank's diary. Because after the secret annex residents were arrested and taken away by the Nazis in August,Miep gathered the books and the loose pages on which Anne had been writing and put them away in her desk, where they remained until the summer ofwhen Otto Frank returned from Auschwitz and, at first, stayed with Miep and Jan Gies.
